Professor Ellis Fowler is an aging English literature teacher at the Rock Spring School for Boys, a prep school in Vermont. It's the final day of the term before the Christmas break.

Following the final bell, Fowler is summoned to the headmaster's office, where the headmaster gently but firmly informs him that, after 51 years of teaching at the school, the board of trustees has made the decision not to renew his contract.
